Buy Nothing Day is an international days of protest against consumerism observed by social activists. Typically celebrated the Friday after the American thanksgiving in North America and the following day internationally. The dates are November 25 and 26 respectively. It was founded in Vancouver by an artist name Ted Dave and subsequently promoted by ad busters magazine, based in Canada. The first Buy Nothing Day was organized in Mexico in September 1992 "as a day for society to examine the issue of over consumption. In the year 1997, it was moved to the Friday after American Thanksgiving Day also called "Black Friday". Black Friday is known as one of the top ten busiest shopping days in the United States. Its one of the busiest days, because things are alot more cheaper than they are on a normal shopping day. However, buy nothing day outside of north america and Israel, is on the following Saturday.
On Buy Nothing Day, people do other activities besides shop, they exactly buy nothing. They go hiking to celebrate the earth and nature. Buy nothing day paddle, people paddle along the San Francisco waterfront. It is promoted by the Bay Area Kayakers to kayak along the notoriously consumptive San Francisco waterfront.
